jonathan frakes is the best dad i never got to have

For most of last year, I worked on and promoted my New York Times bestselling (I’m gonna keep leaning into that until it gets super obnoxious, and then keep going to a little bit) memoir, Still Just A Geek. A huge part of my story is my survival of child…

Time Enough At Last

The phrase “you have too much time on your hands” came across my event horizon, as a response to a silly thing I did to amuse myself. I’ve heard this for my entire life, and every few years, I write a post like this about it. …

Corroding democracy by cheapening it is the point. Making a vulgar example of it — see how little this is worth? See how I can degrade this thing you …

Today marks the seventh anniversary of my choice to stop drinking alcohol.

Today marks the seventh anniversary of my choice to stop drinking alcohol. That’s a nice way of saying “my choice to stop slowly killing myself and actually heal the childhood trauma I haven’t been able to handle,” which is a lot, but is also the whole truth. I originally published…

…fanatics don’t want it to happen — they throw out some crackpot arguments which make no sense — but basically they just want to burn it all down. The entire global economy goes into a tailspin like the 1930s. America missing a debt payment? LOL …

A substantial number of people voted for so-called "moderate" Republicans.

A substantial number of people voted for so-called "moderate" Republicans. Those people will tell themselves and anyone who will listen that they don't agree with or support the MAGA lunatics, but ... gosh darn it, they just can't vote for the Democrat because reasons. But they sure don't support far-right lunacy! They're, you know, just about common sense stuff. The economy and so forth. The thing these folks choose to ignore, and lie to themselves about, is that their vote for a "moderate" is actually a vote to empower the most extreme, nihilist, white christian nationalists in the House.

Millions of Americans began to see Trump as something like an Omnipotent Father Figure. More importantly, they began to have precisely those feelings for him — the feelings wounded children might have towards “good” parents. Feelings of warmth, affiliation, admiration, even love. Hence, when Trump directed them to be hateful, ignorant, foolish, bigoted, even violent — they seemingly obeyed. This is how demagoguery works, at a psychosocial level: the demagogue plays the Omnipotent Parent, and the flock adopts the posture of the Wounded, Helpless Child, whose role it is to obey the parent, because the parent is the Only One who truly loves them. Cherishes them. Will keep them safe. In the insecure, vicious hell that their lives have become.

The Ghosts of Christmas Past

Almost 365 days ago to the minute, I published this at the end of a really difficult and challenging year that featured a massive seizure, back surgery for Anne, and the generalize trauma of what can best be described as “*gestures broadly at everyfuckingthing*” because whatever that may be for…

…t are we really saying? Well, we’re saying that we don’t take our media diet very seriously at all. I was there when Twitter began — not in the room with Jack and Ev, but one of its first serious users. And back when it was fresh, I loved it. But it changed. Back then, the internet was coated in the gloss of idealism. Back then, the world’s richest man wasn’t Voldemort on Mars, either. Things changed. The world went super far right, and instead of becoming a community protecting itself against that, Twitter legimitized it. And for the last few years, even though it made great strides, and a group of noble people worked ve…

I was one of the first 10,000 users on Twitter.

I was one of the first 10,000 users on Twitter. I think I may even be in the first 1500. I LOVED it when we were all helping shape it and figure out what it was going to be. I was there when the hashtag and @ mention was created. I was literally on the thread (before threads were a thing) where we kind of decided that's how we were going to do it. I was one of the first media personalities Twitter highlighted, and used to help the service grow.

Welcome home, Wesley Crusher

From the moment Star Trek Picard was announced, people asked me if Wesley Crusher would make an appearance. Until August of last year, I told the truth when I said that I would love to do that, but had no idea if it would actually happen. I’m pretty psyched that…

Me last night: Okay, it’s 10pm. I have to get up at 5am. Time for bed. My brain at midnight: Just waking you up so you can look at the clock and confirm you have not overslept. Me: Thanks, bae. My brain at 2am: Just waking you up so you…
